A bit of a sleep in this morning (that’s more like a holiday….). We headed south on Highway 101, making our
way to the Avenue of Giants National Park. Had a quick stop at a state park
called Patrick Point and saw some more rugged coastline.
On the way to Eureka we found an avenue of
large Eucalypt Trees on the side of the 101, could even smell them…was a small
reminder of home! In Eureka we stopped
by a couple of older houses built in Victorian style for the Carson
Family.
Then onto an oyster bar (no…not
the “Blue Oyster Bar” from Police Academy lol) called the Humboldt Bay Oyster
Tours and had a wonderful lunch tasting oysters, wine, beer & cheese. The staff here were fantastic.
We had a quick walk around the historic area
of Eureka & moved on. Next stop was at
the Loleta Cheese factory for some cheese tasting. There was 34 different
cheese, but unfortunately they were all different types/flavours of cheddar. None the less we tried them all. Steve tried some of them a few times…. Just to
be sure (cholesterol count is going to sky rocket on this trip lol). On leaving Loleta we noticed a burnt out car
sitting in a side street & decided that it was a good idea to leave (don’t
make eye contact……). We finally arrived at
the Avenue of Giants redwood park. These
trees are amazingly huge/tall. Some are
known to reach as high as 375 (about 125m).
Driving along the road is something else as you see these huge trees right
on the road side. We camped at the
Ancient Redwoods RV park, right near the Immortal Tree. This tree is thought to be 950 years old
& originally 298 feet tall. A bolt
of lightning took the top 50 foot reducing it to 248 feet and it has withstood
floods, fires & even the attempt by humans to cut it down.
Well, that’s us for the night. Catch you tomorrow.
Got a sore neck yet from looking for the tree tops?
